Classroom Situations

Consider the following situations & questions. We will discuss them on Wednesday.

(1) You are planning for the first day of section.

(a) What are your goals in addition to the material you must cover?

(b) What can you do to achieve them?

(2) During class discussion, a student makes a comment that you believe was clearly intended as a joke, but that, in fact, insults a particular identity group (women, students of color, gay or lesbian students, etc.). Some members of the class laugh, but others don't. What do you do?

You decide to ignore the comment, but then several students come to you after class to tell you how upset they are by what was said. What do you do in this case?

(3) A particular student consistently monopolizes the class discussions, often with long-winded and semi-irrelevant answers. The rest of the class squirms whenever this person starts to talk. What do you do?

(4) You are a TA in a class where problem sets are due wednesday at 2 PM; the solutions are handed out at 3. At 3:05, one of your students shows up with his problem set and says, "I forgot it at home and just ran there and back, I didn't have time to see the solutions. Can you accept it late?" What do you do?
